Straight answers

How much does spray foam insulation cost?

Closed-cell foam is priced per board foot (one square foot at one inch thick). Most FoamGuard projects land between $1.25 and $2.50 per board foot depending on thickness, access and total size. Every quote is a fixed price with the thickness and square footage on the data sheet, not an allowance. Use the estimator above for a range on your building.

How thick should closed-cell spray foam be?

Closed-cell becomes an air barrier at about one inch and a Class II vapor retarder (about 1 perm) at roughly an inch and a half. We typically install two to three inches on walls and roof decks in Western PA, and go thicker only where code or the building calls for it. Past three inches, each added inch returns less; see the chart below.

Is spray foam worth it?

If your building leaks air, sweats or has cold spots, usually yes: foam insulates and air-seals in one step, and it does not sag or settle. If you already have a tight, well-insulated building, the return is smaller. We will tell you which one you have.

Can spray foam stop condensation on a metal roof?

Yes. A metal roof sweats when warm, humid inside air touches cold metal. Closed-cell foam bonded to the panel keeps that air off the metal and adds a vapor retarder in the same pass. It is the standard fix for dripping pole barns and shops.

Does spray foam make a building airtight?

Where it is applied, yes; it seals the seams, gaps and penetrations that fiberglass cannot. A tight building should then have controlled ventilation, whether that is a bath fan, an ERV or the existing HVAC. We will flag it if your project needs it.

How long does spray foam last?

Cured closed-cell foam is inert and is designed to last the life of the building. It does not settle, sag or lose R-value the way loose insulation can. The foam we install carries a manufacturer limited lifetime warranty, and our workmanship carries A Craftsman’s Promise, our five-year craftsmanship warranty, on top.

Can spray foam be installed in winter?

Yes. Our rig heats the material and the hose, the foam we spray is rated for substrates down to 15°F, and we check substrate temperature and moisture before every lift. Wet or frosted surfaces get postponed, because foam only bonds to what it can stick to.

What is the difference between open-cell and closed-cell foam?

Closed-cell is dense, R-7.4 per inch, blocks vapor and water, and stiffens the structure. Open-cell is light, about R-3.6 per inch, absorbs moisture and needs a separate vapor retarder in our climate. We install both and will tell you which one your assembly needs.

Is spray foam safe?

Once cured, the foam is stable and inert. During and shortly after application, the space is kept clear of occupants and pets for the manufacturer's re-occupancy period. Our installers hold the ACC SPF-Safety certification, and the closed-cell product we spray is GREENGUARD Gold certified for indoor air quality.

How does FoamGuard warranty its work?

Two ways. A Craftsman’s Promise, FoamGuard’s written craftsmanship warranty, covers the installation itself for five years against defects in workmanship. The foam’s manufacturer covers the material under its own written product warranty; Huntsman’s closed-cell warranty, for example, is a limited lifetime warranty registered within 90 days of application. Both are in writing on every project agreement, and you can check yours any time at foam-guard.com/warranty with your warranty ID and ZIP code.
